Mr Singh Mrs Mehta is the story of Ashwin and Neera who find their spouses are having an affair. Drawn together by shame and anger, they find comfort in their growing friendship even as they resolve not to be like their unfaithful mates.
This highly controversial film marks the debut of writer-director Pravesh Bhardwaj, The title role of Neera Singh was rejected by 60 heroines before Aruna Shields, a Brit-Asian actress agreed to play the part. The film generated a healthy debate in the media on the subject of nudity and Indian cinema, sparked by a ten minute nude painting sequence in the film.
Mr Singh Mrs Mehta is the journey of a middle class girl Neera Singh who discovers that her husband is having an affair. This leads her on to a journey where she ends up having her own affair and allows herself to be a muse and painted naked.
The film also marked the debut of Grammy nominated sitarist Shujaat Hussain Khan and the film’s music has been widely credited in the media for bringing back the melody in Indian film music.
